Our customer is one of the most respected and fastest growing institutional investors worldwide, expecting to exceed $3 trillion AUM by 2050 across all major asset classes. Their operating team partners with global investment groups across a portfolio of 80 assets, driving value creation initiatives to transform and improve operating performance.

The fund engaged InX to build a deep analytics team to drive a truly differentiated approach to private investing and value creation through analytical capabilities. The vision for the team is to work alongside portfolio company management teams to execute data-led projects from PoC explanatory models to fully production-ready ML models that solve real-world business challenges and materially improve operational performance.

This specialist in-house team was built from scratch and includes Deep Analytics Principals (senior engagement leads that translate business problems into data problems and oversee the solutioning), senior data scientists, modellers, data engineers and machine learning experts.

Our approach and response to this challenge

Owing to the fund’s multi-sector investment portfolio, we needed to identify and secure a team with not only excellent technical capabilities but also diverse industry experiences. Additionally, since their portfolio companies often suffer from poor data environments, we required people with experience overcoming data quality and availability issues as opposed to technical minds only trained in data-rich settings such as the GAFA/ FANG brands.

We launched a thorough programme of market research and engagement spanning four key pillars:

  1. Advanced analytics teams in consulting

  2. Leading commercial data analytics teams across industry

  3. Big tech and digital native brands

  4. Investment firms with active data analytics capabilities

We identified 600 professionals across North America with the pre-requisite skills and experience, before prioritising and proactively headhunting the most talented individuals. After a thorough assessment process both from InX and the fund’s operating team, we recommended 2-3 viable candidates for each position, successfully securing their 1st choice for every hire.

The team has already successfully scoped out multiple engagements that will deliver a wildly impressive EBITDA and have impacted their clients’ portfolio companies and are soon to launch Phase 2 of the project – standing up replica data squads to deliver against the increased demand.
