This conversation is with Julie Latta, Partner at a mid-sized professional services firm, where she leads the procurement and supply chain capability, in conversation with Rishi DuSodha, Partner at InX.
Rishi puts a direct question to Julie: what is the one thing firms could do tomorrow to stop losing their best women at senior manager and director level? Her answer is less about policy than about openness. Too many people, she argues, have no clear picture of what the route to partner involves — our role is to improve communication and visibility, so that it is clearer.
That observation leads into a frank discussion of why talented women hold back from asking, what the promotion process feels like from the inside, and the questions Julie thinks every aspiring Partner should be putting to the people already there. She also makes the case for treating this as a shared responsibility, with firms and senior women working together to make the path visible to everyone coming through.

Ask the questions you want answered. Flexibility, margin expectations, what the business case involves: all are valid queries, and a male counterpart would not hesitate to ask.
Build your network from the start, both internally and externally. In professional services the two overlap more than people expect.
Be clear on what you want to achieve and stay true to it. The Partner route is personal, and not everyone will want the same version of it.
